Ilan Pappé on fading progressive support for Israel and illusion that October 7 Hamas attack will resurrect victim status

Look at who Israel's allies are today.  Forget about the 7th of October for a moment.  Until the 6th of October: Donald Trump, Orbán in Hungary, neo-Nazis and neo-right wing in Europe.  These are all the allies of Israel because Israel found it very difficult to resurrect alliances it had in the beginning with social democratic forces, democratic forces, not to mention movement on the Left.  The reality on the ground was too evident for people with a modicum of decency or belief in human rights and justice to say "I am a supporter of Israel today."

Israelis, by the way, lived under the illusion that what happened October 7th would erase it all.  It's amazing to read the Israeli analysis here.  They really believe that they are now absolved from everything they have done in the past and have an absolution of all they are doing now.  And the whole discourse about Israel is going to change.  No more colonialism, no more settler colonialism, no more apartheid like Amnesty International suggested.  They really believe that it almost was a painful, horrific event that enables Israel to fight more successfully the moral debt.  Of course they're totally wrong.
