The fact that Marechal's observation is lost on people explains why we keep looking for economic and other causes for tribal/ethnic/nationalistic conflicts. Humans don't need anything as reasonable as economics as a cause to strike down an enemy, or even to define someone as an enemy. If we feel fear, vengefulness, or envy, that's enough.
